Portland, OR -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/11/2016 -- SmartChoice Fitness says 'when running outside do not be fooled into thinking that a cap is sufficient protection for your eyes in the summer months, it is worryingly not even enough when it is cloudy outside!'
There is nothing better than lacing up your trainers and going out for a run on a sunny day, if you're a runner of course! Sports watch – check, headphones – check, water bottle – check…..possibly a cap put on to protect their head against the sun and some sun cream may even be slapped on before a runner heads out of the door. But it is estimated that 1 in 4 Americans will not put on a pair of sunglasses before heading outside – report by The Vision Council.
A recent study by the World Health Organization found that the eye is susceptible to almost twice the amount of UV radiation between the hours of 8 to 10 a.m. and again between 2 and 4 p.m. Popular times of the day to be outside exercising.
"UV damage is cumulative and cannot be reversed, so that is why it is vital to prevent harmful UV radiation at a young age," said Dr. Dora Adamopoulos, optometrist and medical advisor to The Vision Council. "However, you can prevent further damage to your eyes and increased risk for eye diseases by making UV eye protection a habit, especially for outdoor fitness buffs."
Unfortunately wearing a cap will not suffice either as reflected UV is just as damaging as direct UV.
- Water reflects up to 100%;
- Snow reflects up to 85%;
- Dry sand and concrete reflect up to 25%; and
- Grass reflects up to 3%.....as reported by The Vision Council.
It is recommended that you have a good pair of flexible and lightweight running sunglasses in your bag. Make sure that they wrap around your face, giving you protection from the sun at all angles and being a more secure fit. Polycarbonate are the ideal, as they are scratch and impact resistant. These may cost a little more but they are light and an absolute pleasure to wear for high impact sports such as running.
Remember UV rays are still present even when it is a cloudy day – if in doubt put on your running sunglasses!
