Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/07/2014 -- In 2013, wound care grew by 2% in current value terms. Much of this growth can be attributed to the healthy performances of gauze, tape and other wound care as well as sticking plasters/adhesive bandages, which grew by 2% and 3%, respectively. First aid kits, on the other hand, recorded a minor current value decline. This was largely down to the category being highly mature and saturated, with limited growth opportunities.
Beiersdorf remained the leading manufacturer in wound care in Germany in 2013, commanding a 39% share of value sales. The company?s position can be attributed to the strong presence of the Hansaplast brand. Beiersdorf saw its value sales increase by 3% in 2013, mainly due to a loyal customer base as well as its ability to cater for the needs of multiple target groups. Paul Hartmann ranked second in wound care with a value share of 21%. It was also the leading player in gauze, tape and other wound care with a value share of 71%. The company was also active in first aid kits and sticking plasters/adhesive bandages. Within sticking plasters/adhesive bandages, Hartmann was active with the growing Dermaplast brand.

Wound care is set to remain fairly flat in value CAGR terms at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period, posting overall value growth of just 1%. The main cause of such weak growth will be sticking plasters/adhesive bandages, with premium product sales set to slow due to a reliance on continued demand for unique features. Demand for first aid kits will in all likelihood remain stable over the forecast period, with the category posting a marginal value CAGR decline at constant 2013 prices.
