Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/16/2014 -- On 23 July 2013, two earthquakes struck the Cook Strait, 30km east of Seddon. The 5.8 magnitude and 6.5 magnitude earthquakes rocked the upper South Island and lower North Island during 2013, with Wellington residents being particularly affected. Earthquake damage was concentrated within the Wellington CBD, particularly Manners Mall, Cuba Street and Featherstone Street. Nonetheless, earthquake damage was also caused in Paraparaumu, Wainuiomata, Porirua and the Hutt Valley. Several aftershocks also took place during 2013 following these initial earthquakes. As a result, demand for first aid kits surged during the latter half of 2013 as consumers flocked to supermarkets, DIY/home improvement stores and mass merchandisers to stock up on first aid and civil defence supplies.

Competitive Landscape

Johnson & Johnson Pacific (NZ) Ltd was the leading player within wound care during 2013, with value share of 23%. The company owns the most popular sticking plasters/adhesive bandages brand, Band-Aid, which held 37% value share in 2013 and was the second ranked wound care brand in 2013. The Band-Aid brand enjoys a well-established presence within New Zealand, with its major rival being Elastoplast.

Industry Prospects

Private label is expected to expand its share within wound care over the forecast period, which in turn will have a dampening effect on value growth for the category. Indeed, value sales for wound care are expected to only increase marginally in average constant 2013 prices over the forecast period to reach NZ$13 million in 2018. Furthermore, relatively stagnant growth will continue if the category continues to lack innovation and new product development, as was the case during 2013.
