Beta-2 microglobulin is a protein of major histocompatibility complex class I molecules, which is used as tumor marker for certain blood cancers. It is present on all nucleated cells. The beta-2 microglobulin is tested in plasma, serum, or urine samples. The beta-2 microglobulin level in the sample helps detect disease activity; for example, low level of beta-2 microglobulin in serum indicates less disease activity, while high levels indicate higher disease activity.
