During 2011, the cigarette sales registered 6% growth to reach GTQ1.8 billion. This dynamism is attributable to the recovery from the global financial crisis, when consumers were able to purchase legal, more expensive packs of cigarettes instead of cheaper contraband products of lower quality. Similarly, illicit trade took a hit in 2011, with sales of illicit cigarettes falling by 5% in volume terms due to the improved effectiveness of the government's policy of lowering contraband.
