Consumers responded to the worsening economic prospects and retail price hikes on packaged food by cutting back on volume consumption in 2012. Many categories thus posted declining retail volume sales, including confectionery, spreads, biscuits, breakfast cereals, ice cream, oils and fats, yoghurt and chilled processed meats.
