The recession affecting the country had a negative impact on sales of fine wines/champagne and spirits in the Netherlands in 2012. After positive development during the first half of the review period, sales suffered in 2009 and again in 2012 with lower demand and a shift towards less expensive products. Dutch consumers adopted a more cautious spending attitude, choosing lower-priced alcoholic drinks.
