Volume sales of cigarettes grew slightly in 2012, increasing by 1%. The increase in tobacco tax in 2010 pushed up the retail selling price of cigarettes by JPY60-JPY140 per packet. As the average price of a cigarette packet is JPY400, the 2010 tax increase was a major price hike for consumers.
