Overall sales of luxury jewellery and timepieces registered a decline in volume terms in 2012, driven by the recessionary economic climate and consequent lower consumer purchasing power in Italy. Conversely, luxury jewellery and timepieces recorded a rise in value terms. Price volatility of raw materials such as gold and diamonds and the fluctuations of the euro currency triggered price increases in 2012. Such cost increases forced brand owners to raise retail prices.
