Branded chewing tobacco and snuff continued to be non-existent in Indonesia in 2012 as the concept remained unfamiliar to the majority of tobacco consumers, apart from those who have exposure abroad. Among those who are educated about the concept, chewing tobacco is seen as a greater risk to health than cigarettes as it is placed within the mouth, in direct contact with internal body parts.
