Cigarettes remained by far the largest category within tobacco in New Zealand during 2012, accounting for 71% of total tobacco current value sales. Ongoing efforts to educate the population about the potential dangers of smoking and progressively restrictive anti-smoking legislation resulted in a decline in the number of cigarette smokers in New Zealand over the course of the review period.
