In 2012, there was a noticeable expansion in the number of discounters in the country. During this year, Bodega Aurrera (Grupo Wal-Mart) opened 296 new outlets in medium and small cities across the country. As a result, consumers shifted from purchasing goods at small stores and open markets to purchasing more goods at the now available discounters. This trend was an important driver of sales of traditional toys, as more purchases were made through formal retail channels.
