The confidence of average French households in their financial situation continues to deteriorate. This is being caused by stagnant GDP growth and high unemployment rates, which reached peaks during 2014. French consumers tend to prefer to save money and if they need to make purchases which exceed their budget, they are using their own savings, avoiding taking on debt. After a year of stabilisation in 2011, the proportion of households with outstanding debt has been in decline ever since.
