Oklahoma City, OK -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/31/2014 -- A dental emergency is never expected. Besides getting teeth cleaned regularly, people don’t think about their teeth much except when they have a toothache or an emergency occurs. However, at the moment of emergency, the situation can be extremely tense. Planning ahead can reduce tension and stress.
Dr. Tim Kirby is one of a few emergency dentists in Oklahoma City . He encourages patients to plan for emergencies and to make plans to visit him so he can resolve issues quickly and with as little pain as possible.
What is considered a dental emergency?
The most common types of dental emergencies are broken and chipped teeth, toothache, broken jaw bones, having teeth knocked out, lost fillings and crowns, broken dental work such as braces, and other mouth injuries. There are other types of dental emergencies, but these are the types that most people are likely to encounter.
How to prepare?
Having items on hand to deal with the emergency can certainly increase the chances that Dr. Kirby will be better able to deal with the emergency and may even be crucial to saving teeth. Some people have created emergency dental kits so they can be prepared at a moments notice. Although these kits are helpful for immediate attention, they do not replace the expertise and treatment by a dentist. But here are a few things to include in an emergency kit:
- Up-to-date contact information for your dentist
- Saline solution
- Small container with a lid
- Over-the-counter pain medication (not asprin)
- Gauze or cotton balls to absorb blood
If a tooth gets complete knocked out, immediately rinse the tooth (don’t scrub) being sure to hold the tooth by the top, not to touch the root, and place it in a container of saline solution or milk to preserve it while traveling to the dentist. Preservation is key for teeth. For pain, use a warm compress to apply pressure to the area of pain until you reach the dentist.
Dr. Kirby and his team will immediately evaluate a patient and determine what needs to be treated first and what can wait. After initial treatment, Dr. Kirby will educate the patient as to what needs to be done to resolve the issue over time. More treatment may be required in coming days, depending on the issue.
