Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign proliferative (overgrowth) form that affects the synovial membrane (also termed as stratum synoviale or synovium). Synovial membrane is a thin sheet of connective tissue that lines the inner surface of capsules of tendon sheath and synovial joints. The cell bulk or lump that results from overgrowth is not carcinogenic and does not spread to other parts of the body by metastasis.
