Spreads recorded growth of 4% in 2012, driven in particular by strong sales of premium spreads, as higher-end versions of jams, honey, peanut butter and chocolate spreads continued to be introduced. Almond butter, exotic preserves, and hazelnut-based spreads were largely niche products in the past, but have swiftly grown into substantial players in their prospective areas.
