Growth in consumer foodservice slowed slightly in 2012, largely owing to the economic downturn in China and ongoing global economic instability. The downturn resulted in a number of independent foodservice outlets closing their doors as they struggled for business, while a number of chains also decelerated in terms of outlet expansion. In response to the downturn, foodservice operators took active roles in a variety of promotional activities, aiming to stimulate demand.
