Spirits, with sales dominated by local products, are appealing to low-income earners who drink for the sake of getting drunk due to their considerably high alcohol content and much cheaper price of local brands compared to imported spirits. In 2012, police raids on alcoholic drinks, especially those with excessive alcohol content, were conducted more frequently in order to thwart any drunken campaigners creating havoc during the direct regional election in many regions throughout the year.
