At the beginning of 2012, INEGI reported that informal employment had finally reached the same level as formal employment, with around 15 million workers in each area. However, leading university UNAM believes that INEGI's data is flawed, and that the number of workers in informal channels surpassed the number of formal workers a long time ago.
