Wine remains a very small category in Egypt for various reasons. Locally-produced brands tend to be poor in quality and thus are not very popular, while imported brands are made prohibitively expensive by high import taxes, at 1,800% for still wine. Therefore, consumers are not very familiar with either domestic or imported wine and those who are tend to regard highly-priced imported brands as a luxury. In any case, such high prices are unaffordable for the majority of consumers.
