Tourism Flows Domestic in Italy - New Market Report
The number of domestic trips taken in 2012 declined by 1% in volume terms, dropping to 87.3 million. This was mainly due to the economic and financial crisis, higher tax level and lower employment rate, a constant increase in the cost of petrol, which all strongly impacted the total budget for holidays, as Italians started paying greater attention to transport costs. Therefore, Italians in many cases preferred to stay at home without travelling at all.
