The performance of starchy roots continues to be determined primarily by that of potatoes, which dominate the category. The potatoes category continued to lose some ground as a result of the popularity of alternative carbohydrate options, such as rice and pasta. However, the main problems for the potatoes category in 2013 were higher wholesale and retail prices in the first half of the year, as a result of a poor harvest, and increasing competition from lower-priced tinned potatoes.
