Chicago has a well-developed financial and professional services industry, thanks to the availability of an educated workforce, beneficial business environment and high quality of life. The city is a major financial centre in North America. In 2012, Chicago created 3.5% of total US GDP, and 40% of this was derived from business services. The metropolitan region boasts a higher than average income level in the US and 42% of its households receive income over US$100,000.
