The informal economy is strong in Mexico, with authorities showing increasing concern about this towards the end of the review period. The informal employment rate in Mexico slightly decreased from 60% in February 2013 to 58% in February 2014 while unemployment also reduced during the year, unemployment remains high. The rate of informality is closely tied to unemployment rates, as many unemployed people opt to operate informal street stalls/kiosks as a form of self-employment.
