On July 30 2014, US District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan ordered local lender Bank of America to pay a fine worth USD1.27bn for fraud over defective mortgages sold by its unit Countrywide Financial Corp. The judge also ordered former mid-level executive of Countrywide Rebecca Mairone to pay USD1mn. The judge found Mairone's 'leading role' in the fraud and called some of her testimony 'implausible'.
