Violence and poverty are common in the cities of Central America, and Guatemala City often ranks among the worst performing metropolises in the region. Guatemala's civil war ended in 1996, but the city is still overwhelmed by neglect and the slum communities of the war refugees. On a positive note, the city has enjoyed a decade of positive economic growth and the sprawling malls, growing number of vehicles and infrastructure projects are signs of Guatemala City's potential.
