Bilirubin is brownish-yellow substance found in bile and is produced when the liver breaks down old red blood cells. Bilirubin is present in the blood in two forms conjugated bilirubin and unconjugated bilirubin. High levels of bilirubin in the bloodstream produce jaundice, a yellowish discoloration of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
