In the current issue of the WTG Manufacturing and Supply Chain Industry news, manufacturing journalist TR Cutler, looked at the importance of real-time shop floor data. According to Cutler, “Increasingly as manufacturers return to expansion, the demands of existing and new customers, drives the need to increase the number of shop floor machines to improve capacity. This rapid growth often means losing control of production output. Monitoring machines on the plant floor to capture needed data helps everyone understand how machines are operating, and how well each shift performs.”

JustFoodERP is featured in the current issue of AutomationMedia.com. In the feature article manufacturing journalist Thomas R. Cutler reports that according to the Standish Group, ERP implementations in midsized companies have a high degree of failure. Some ERP vendors have better success rates than others. It begs the question: Why? What are the qualities and characteristics of successful ERP technologies and implementations? The research was not rhetorical; could any ERP vendor point to a nearly perfect implementation record?

In the current issue of Canadian Plant magazine, Noelle Stapinsky, profiled how Memex Automation connects machine status with the top floor. According to the author, “For most manufacturers, corporate communication flows through a centralized, internet-enabled network such as an enterprise resource planning system (ERP). And on the shop floor, where there can be a mix of highly automated machinery and older units, getting productivity or machine status updates often requires a trip to the production area and perusal of an operator’s manually kept log. Manufacturing machinery such as tooling machines communicate using serial ports—which are unable to connect to the information super highway—therefore, real-time production data is often there, just not accessible or integrated into the central system. If these machines could be outfitted with advanced communication technology, a manufacturer could avoid having to buy new machinery, thus potentially saving thousands if not millions of dollars.
