As discussed in a new LeddarTech white paper, optical time-of-flight measurement computes the distance to a target from the round-trip time of flight between a sensor and an object. Since the speed of light in air changes very little over normal temperature and pressure extremes, and its order of magnitude is faster than the speed of objects to be measured, optical time-of-flight measurement is one of the most reliable ways to accurately measure distance to objects in a contactless fashion.

The Global Salmon Initiative, a group representing many of the world's top Salmon Farming operations, issued a tender for new sources of oils rich in omega-3 to be used in salmon feed. With 84% of the world's oceanic fisheries already at capacity, over-utilized, or outright exhausted, Farmed Salmon are an increasingly important source of food for the growing global population. The Global Salmon Initiative's new worldwide tender for novel oils rich in omega-3 will help ensure that salmon farmers have the feed needed to keep up with growing demand for their output.

Pierre Olivier, Vice President, Engineering and Manufacturing, LeddarTech Inc. recently authored an important white paper regarding detection and ranging. Olivier said, "Although it is possible to obtain distance information with passive technologies, such as stereo triangulation of camera images, these passive technologies are usually very constrained in capability. For instance, stereo triangulation requires well-defined edges for the matching algorithms to work. Therefore, the most commonly used technologies for measuring the position of an object involve sending energy towards the object to be measured, collecting the echo signal, and analyzing this echo signal to determine the position of one or several objects located in the sensor's field of view. Since energy is intentionally emitted towards the object to be measured, we will refer to these technologies as being "active."

LeddarTech optical time-of-flight sensing technology was recently featured in Engineering.com. Leddar optical time-of-flight sensing technology is based on direct time-of-flight measurement, but rather than working directly on the analog signal, Leddar light processing starts by sampling the receive echo for the detection range of the sensor. Leddar expands the sampling rate and resolution of this sampled signal. Finally, it analyzes the resulting discrete-time signal and recovers the distance for every object in its field of view.

LeddarTech has a public transportation operator client who sought a system that would detect vehicles to automatically activate access gates and garage doors at its facility. The system allowed access only to buses, not cars. This installation had to be robust with selective access control (discriminating between different types of vehicles). Besides being cost-effective, the solution met outdoor installation requirements able to operate day and night, including under adverse weather conditions. Additionally, it ensured early detection of vehicles as they approach the barrier gate or garage door in order to improve traffic fluidity.

LeddarTech sensors have been integrated in cars and trucks for quite some time already, providing feedback on key systems and components. The new trend is to use smart sensor capabilities to provide information about the vehicle's surroundings and about the road ahead, in order to increase passenger safety and reduce material damage. Short-distance detection for parking and back-up assistance is readily available, but manufacturers' current challenge is to offer efficient collision warning and avoidance systems in the majority of their new car models. Detecting the obstacles ahead (from cars to people to animals), providing blind-spot assistance during lane changes, or even making driverless cars a reality, are all automotive applications where sensor technology plays a key role.

LeddarTech has a customer with a smart parking solution that operates networked parking meters integrated into a city-wide parking management system. The customer's objective was to provide the best parking experience for drivers by allowing them to locate available street parking spaces through a mobile application. The challenge consisted of ensuring both robust and reliable street parking space occupancy detection for various types of vehicles, including cars and motorcycles. The system had to be based on a cost-effective sensor that could be mounted to or overhead of smart street parking meters, and able to ensure round-the-clock operation (day and night) and operate in all weather conditions, including fog, rain, and snow.
