As marketing specialists, we are constantly asked about strategy. Many wonder how effective word-of-mouth marketing really is and how much of their marketing plan should rely on it. “Normal or satisfied practices cannot rely on word-of-mouth marketing at all because they are not creating memorable experiences for their patients,” notes Jamie Verkamp, Partner at (e)Merge. “These practices have to spend a lot more money on advertising because their patients aren’t inspired to share their encounters with others. But practices creating buzz and memorable experiences can harness more holistic marketing approaches because they have so many loyal patients that will take their message viral very quickly.”

To say that the American healthcare industry is in flux is a gigantic understatement. The changes that are both upon us and impending are countless, ranging from the electronic record transition to the political overhaul. In a time of uncertainty, it can be helpful to focus on that which we do have control over. No matter how many adaptations we have to make, we can strive to ensure patients do not feel the stress of the behind-the-scenes mayhem. We can also work toward not just maintaining, but improving the patient experience.

Appearances aren’t everything, but they do account for much of a first impression. As people increasingly search for healthcare on the internet, your web presence and the image it projects for your practice become a vital part of your identity. Still, we see a horrifying number of health networks and private practices with archaic, unsightly websites.

Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital has been publishing their quality and safety statistics for years now, letting the public see both their successes and failures. Patients can see how the hospital compares to national rates and other institutions. Though some say CEO Paul Levy has opened the hospital to bad media coverage, Levy says that any unsavory incidents that come to light are simply speed bumps on the road to something bigger and better: a system that empowers patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare and drives staff to do their best work.

Women’s Health Associates didn’t start giving to charity for marketing purposes. The Kansas City-based women’s clinic was doing a staff fundraiser for Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure when an opportunity arose to involve its patients. “Our staff decorated speculums as part of an internal contest,” says WHA’s Sylvia Haverty, with a laugh. “One of the staff suggested it may be fun to display them in the waiting room and allow patients to contribute to the cause as well. People enjoyed them and thought they were quite funny.” Another opportunity came along when staff were gathering supplies for Haiti’s earth quake victims. “Someone asked if our patients might need a convenient drop off point for donations too. Why not involve them?”

With Valentine’s Day around the corner it is all about loving the one you are with, which is a concept that many practices could put into action with very little money and a lot more effort. Over the past year, Social Media has become a booming trend and shows no signs of going away anytime soon. As it has exploded so quickly, many are lost on the concept, while others are taking advantage of it. A number of physicians and medical practices are now recognizing Social Media as a means to connect with their patients in a personal and innovative way. Allowing patients to get involved and truly interact with their physicians is making them feel connected to their healthcare on a more personal level. Of course patients can surf the web for medical information, but utilizing their own physician or practice as a health resource and connect virtually. And, medical practices and physicians are seeing this benefit in creating loyal patients who refer friends and family members.
