WCS improves system reliability, according to QC Software. In many cases, the WMS/ERP system is not physically located at the warehouse. This is particularly true when there are multiple warehouses in different geographical locations. In the event of communication problems, the warehouse stops working. Since the WCS is always located at the warehouse, it can maintain warehouse operations in the event that the connection between the warehouse and the corporate WMS/ERP system goes down.

In the current issue of Warehouse Management News, http://qcsoftware.com/PDFs/Newsletter_Aug_2010.pdf, QC Software President Rich Hite, noted, “According to recent surveys taken by industry professionals, manufacturing and warehousing companies are more optimistic about the economy. Compared to 2008, more companies are planning to invest in material handling technology in the next few years in an effort to become more efficient and competitive. Specifically, they are interested in RFID, automated storage, and bar code scanners. As for information technology, companies are emphasizing warehouse control systems to manage their equipment. Managers believe there will be fewer jobs as automation increases. Since sales have decreased in the past few years, it is not surprising that companies are focused on continuous improvement, productivity, cost containment and faster return on investment. Companies are evaluating their resources to improve throughput.

According to QC Software President, Rich Hite, “Slotting is a balancing act. You have to delicately juggle a number of balls to make sure inventory is placed in the most effective position. This includes the size, type and weight of each SKU, picking frequency, order commonality (items picked together are usually stored together), ergonomics, storage media, special storage requirements (for hazardous materials or food), picking technology, storage layout, shelf life, etc. You should re-evaluate your slotting practices when business needs change, such as the addition of new inventory, seasonal changes, or a rapid growth period.”
