This positive performance mainly derived from strong value sales of topical antifungals. In 2013, topical antifungals grew by 4% in current value terms, making it one of the best performing categories. Dermatologicals benefited from German consumers? positive perception of OTC dermatological products, with many consumers being willing to self-medicate skin problems. Many consumers considered OTC dermatologicals as very effective at treating skin problems such as athlete?s foot or bites and rashes.

Competitive Landscape:

Novartis Consumer Health continued to lead dermatologicals in 2013 with a value share of 15%. Novartis is active in dermatologicals through two main brands, namely Fenistil and Lamisil. The leader was closely followed by domestic manufacturer Bayer Vital, which held a value share of 12%. Johnson & Johnson ranked third with a 9% value share.
