New Manufacturing research report from Euromonitor International is now available from Fast Market Research
Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/12/2014 -- While other categories of beverages have been negatively impacted by the current deep recession in Italy, the performance of hot drinks was positive in 2011/2012 and over the entire review period. In fact, an argument can be made that the current negative economic conditions may be benefitting sales of hot drinks through the retail channel as consumers increasingly cut back on spending in bars, cafes and restaurants. Italians' deep-seated and sophisticated coffee culture means that, despite these cutbacks, they are unwilling to give up their daily intake of coffee. It is therefore not surprising that demand for coffee has increased steadily over the past several years. The fastest-growing packaging types for coffee include aluminium trays, folding cartons and stand-up pouches, all of which experienced double-digit percentage growth in 2012.

Industry Prospects
Growth of coffee pods will remain very robust over the forecast period as this technology becomes increasingly mainstream in the Italian market. Average growth over the forecast period will remain in double-digit percentage figures as the penetration of coffee pod and capsule machines in Italian homes remains low, leaving a great deal of room for growth. In terms of packaging for coffee pods, growth will be healthy across all types, although there is expected to be a gradual shift away from more expensive-to-produce metal tins towards greater use of cheaper alternatives, such as flexible aluminium/plastic packaging and folding cartons. This shift is logical, as the market for pods expands away from the early adopters, many of whom viewed ownership of a coffee pod and capsule machine as a status symbol. The prolonged nature of the Italian economic downturn is helping to accelerate this trend as a growing number of consumers view coffee pods as a more inexpensive alternative to the daily or several-times-a-day trip to the cafe for an espresso.
