New Release Mirrors the Experiences of a Third-Culture Child

Enumclaw, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/30/2017 -- Third culture kids—children who accompany their parents into another culture—share the common characteristics of a large worldview and language acquisition. They are often cultural bridges, and find their sense of belonging in relationship to others of similar backgrounds, rather than shared race or ethnicity alone, according to Ruth E. Van Reken, author of Cross Cultural Kids.

Dawn Baird, author of new release Joshua Moves to the Jungle (Redemption Press 2017), relates her own family's cross-cultural experience of moving to Bomili in the rain forest of Democratic Republic of the Congo. In this illustrated children's book, the new culture is experienced through the eyes and experiences of her son, three-year old Joshua Baird. "Free of prejudices and secure in his family's arms and God's protection, Joshua's open heart is ready to learn and love, even living in conditions grown-ups may think challenging," says Baird who has a master's in English with a specialization in teaching English as a second language.

Dawn Baird, along with her husband Bob and three children lived and worked as missionaries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for twenty-five years. The family lived in a mud house with a leaf roof at first and learned to speak Swahili. When an illness in their family forced early retirement, Baird turned to writing and speaking under the banner of Baird Family Adventures.

Baird tells this story of their family's cross-cultural experiences as a children's story, saying, "Even college students preparing to live or work in a culture other than their own would benefit from this story. The simplest examples can be best for understanding love and acceptance."
