Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/04/2015 -- In contrast to previous years, 2014 was marked by low innovation efforts from manufacturers of small cooking appliances; very few ground-breaking small cooking appliances were launched. Players may have considered the French market as having lower potential for value creation, as households, entangled in sluggish socioeconomic conditions, were likely to react less enthusiastically to innovative product launches. On the other hand, demand for some of the most dynamic products in the category pod coffee machines and light fryers was either approaching saturation or declining. The relatively high rate of penetration amongst French households and the prevailing low consumer confidence index were other factors impeding growth.
Despite having lost some ground over 2013-2014, Groupe SEB remained the leading company in small cooking appliances in 2014, capturing a 29% share of volume sales. From a general perspective, some smaller fragmented emerging brands ? notably Russell Hobbs, Lagrange, Severin, Krampouz, Tristar, Domotic and Clatronic ? were able to grow by leveraging a better design/price positioning for some of their product lines. Amongst the top five category leaders, only BSH France managed to increase its overall volume sales, thanks to strong discounts offered for Bosch-Tassimo hard pod coffee machines.

Over the next five years small cooking appliances is likely to maintain a negative outlook, with a negligible negative CAGR. Coffee machines ? which generated the biggest share of volume sales in 2014, with a 49% share of overall sales ? has exceeded a penetration rate of 100%, and pod coffee machines is still likely to grow by a volume CAGR of 1% over the next five years. Volume sales of diverse other small cooking appliances are only expected to see renewed positive volume growth from 2018, and conditional on the earlier 2015-2016 economic recovery of the French economy. The positive performances of some of the smaller categories (mini ovens, electric grills, toasters and light fryers) are unlikely to offset the declines in other categories.
