Organic Certification: Streamlining Industrial Processes for Quality

Buying organic food online can be a hassle as one cannot differentiate between Organic or regular pesticide laden products. Organic certification gives a certain guarantee that purchased organic products are checked and tested for authenticity.

New Delhi, India -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/12/2016 -- According to CCOF, foods and other materials are given organic certificate according to standards set by USDA National Organic Program. The concept for certification was developed during Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. After regular revisions by National Organic Standards Board, the standards came into effect during 2002. The revised terms now take into account various factors such as soil quality, animal raising, pest and weed control, and use of input materials for certification.

Organic certification is a written assurance given by an independent third party about the production methodology and quality of products to conform to special requirements.

It is also required by the standards that one can only apply for the certification in their third year of organic farming. This way the soil and the entire process is organic in nature and pesticide free.

So briefly the process is:

- Application by farmer/producer/processor.

- Application review and risk assessment.

- On-site audit (Interview of concerned personnel, on-site investigation of field/processing/storage,verification of practices and inputs employed)

- Lab Testing of produce, verification of records maintained by the farmer/producer and yield estimation etc.

- Informing farmer/producer/processor of the non-compliant actions and improvements to be done.

- Assessment of the necessary actions taken by the farmer/producer/processor.

- Issuance/Denial of scope certification accordingly.

All certification agencies in India are regulated by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

ALL THINGS ORGANIC is also NPOP (National Program for Organic Certification) certified as processors thus making sure the chain from top to bottom is certified and the produce is always regulated.

Certified organic products or even organically grown products (even cosmetics) are not easily accessible even in the larger cities as a lot of farms are situated far away from the cities or the farmers situated in the relatively inaccessible rural areas are not able to sell their products on a major scale or end up losing interest in organic farming due to lack of sales.

A lot of times they switch to conventional farming due to lack of funds or understanding to get certified and they think that getting certification is a tedious process. This is where All Things Organic is working to help the farmers by launching their Farm Traceability Program – Footprints where they want to connect the farmer to the consumers so that they feel connected to the chain. Buy buying organic products online has become an easy job with online marketplaces that have not only made it accessible to larger cities but also the smaller cities making sure the organic lifestyle and organic goodness is spread to everyone.
