In fact the leading grocery retailers, namely Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury?s and Marks & Spencer, accounted for 70% of outlets in self-service cafeterias at the end of the review period. The overall number of outlets increased by 2% to 2,934 in 2013, as the number of hypermarkets, in which self-service cafeterias usually opened, rose by 3%. Growth picked up again from 2013, with Asda implementing the most important expansion plans, followed by Morrisons and Tesco.

Grocery retailers are the leading players in self-service cafeterias in the UK, accounting for 70% or more of outlets, value sales and volume transactions. Tesco held the top position in 2013, with an outlet share of 22% and a 21% share of value sales. Tesco benefits from its popularity as a shopping destination, and from its large outlet volume of 639 self-service cafeterias. Morrisons, meanwhile, ranked second with a 14% share of outlets, whilst J?s (Sainsbury?s) and Asda ranked third and fourth with 13% and 12% shares of outlet volumes respectively in 2013. Marks & Spencer held fifth position with a 10% share.
