Food Manufacturers Address Healthy Senior Snacking Reports TraceGains

Westminster, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/13/2015 -- Almost everyone snacks daily, according to new Nielsen research, yet snacking among consumers over the age of 65, is contributing to extended life expectancy and a higher quality of life. Jenn Brusco, TraceGains' Director of Media and Content discussed in the company blog how snack manufacturers look to tailor offerings to deliver snacks that appeal to both the palate and psyche.

According to Brusco, the FDA recognizes that seniors face a greater food risk that younger people. The FDA is outlining some of the inherent food safety concerns for older Americans in Food Safety for Older Adults.

Brusco explained, "It is normal for our bodies not to work as well as they did when we were younger. Changes in organs and body systems are expected as we grow older. These changes often make more susceptible to contracting a foodborne illness or food poisoning. Stomach and intestinal tract may hold on to foods for a longer period of time; liver and kidneys may not readily rid our bodies of toxins; and our sense of taste or smell may be altered."
