Self-Service Cafeterias in the US - New Market Research Report

New Food market report from Euromonitor International: "Self-Service Cafeterias in the US"

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/05/2014 -- Self-service cafeterias, typically a regional phenomenon, are most common in the West South Central and South Atlantic regions of the US, a fact that places a substantial cap on expansion opportunities, especially given the volume of customers one outlet must be equipped to serve. Typical consumers include senior citizens, families and other highly value-conscious consumers who are looking for a varied away-from-home experience. Customers are generally responsible for their own service, from selecting the food from a buffet line, paying for it and carrying it to a table. Many outlets even require customers to clear their own tables when they are finished dining, keeping labour costs low. Traditionally, menus contain classic, southern-style recipes and generous portions to appeal to consumers looking for consistency and value; however today?s healthy eating habits have begun to spread across the nation, negatively impacting demand for the sort of food served in self-service cafeterias.

Competitive Landscape

In October 2013, corresponding with the 30th anniversary of its founding, Buffets Inc, the parent company of Home Town Buffet, Old Country Buffet, Country Buffet, Ryan?s and Fire Mountain buffet chains and the Tahoe Joe?s Famous Steakhouse casual dining brand, changed its name to Ovation Brands Inc. In a statement, Ovation CEO Anthony Wedo stressed that the change is not simply nominal. ?We are a different company now; we are foundationally about continuous innovation,? he said in a statement. ?We are passionate about building a new operating culture across all of our brands. The name Ovation Brands represents a call to action for all our teammates and guests: Our goal is to ensure that each and every day our six brands are worthy of applause.? This rebranding follows Buffet Inc?s January 2012 filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, at which time the company operated 494 restaurants. Nation?s Restaurant News reported that the company emerged from bankruptcy in June 2012 with 398 company- owned outlets and US$50 million in exit financing.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, self-service cafeterias in the US is predicted to record a negative constant value CAGR of 1% to reach US$1.3 billion in sales in 2018. This category has historically struggled without regard to the economic times, and those struggles are expected to continue. However, its focus on a value-conscious audience will always draw some customers who are mindful of their food expenditure, and so it is likely that a base level will eventually be reached.
