Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/10/2014 -- US Airways purchased American Airlines in 2013 to complete what seems to be the final step in a wave of airline mergers between 2001 and 2011. Consolidation has reduced the number of active players in the industry and it is now dominated by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Continental Holdings, which control a combined 74% of scheduled airline value sales.

Industry Prospects:

Over the forecast period, low-cost carriers are expected to see value sales increase at a 6% CAGR (at constant 2013 prices). Low-cost carriers gained important airline slots at the end of 2013 when American Airlines was forced to divest slots at Washington Reagan and New York LaGuardia as a result of the US Airways merger. At Washington Reagan, Southwest gained 56 slots, JetBlue purchased 40 slots (16 of which were previously leased from American) and Virgin bought eight slots. In New York, Southwest purchased 22 slots (10 of which it was previously leasing from American) and Virgin American bought the remaining 12 slots. These slots will help these low-cost carriers increase capacity at major airports, leading to increased revenue.
