US Airways purchased American Airlines in 2013 to complete what seems to be the final step in a wave of airline mergers between 2001 and 2011. Consolidation has reduced the number of active players in the industry and it is now dominated by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Continental Holdings, which control a combined 74% of scheduled airline value sales.
