This is mainly caused by the large amounts of Ecuadorians that are adopting habits learned from travelling or living abroad or by friends or relatives who have. Also, local and regional consumption is increasing. As most imported products are quite expensive due to import taxes, local companies are taking advantage and trying to increase their target markets towards at least middle income groups. However, Chilean and Argentinean wines are increasing their exports to Ecuador as French and Spanish wine are too expensive. South American wines are quite an affordable option and are preferred by those who would rather consume imported wine (usually middle and higher income groups).

Competitive Landscape

Chilean brands lead in 2013. They represent 70% of the wine sales in Ecuador, mainly because both countries have strong business relations, which simplifies imports and has created a strong positioning. Among the most renowned Chilean brands are Concha y Toro and Casillero del Diablo.
