North Carolina Theatre and Broadway Series South Present Les Misérables

Kristin Buie, communications manager of North Carolina Theatre, has announced that the organization, in conjunction with Broadway Series South, will present eight performances of Les Misérables from Tuesday, Feb. 14 through Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, located at 2 E. South St. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m., with additional matinee performances on Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. Cameron Mackintosh’s new production marks the 25th anniversary national tour of the musical, which has played more than 43,000 professional performances worldwide before more than 55 million people, including 21 years in London that has made it the world’s longest-running musical. Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables features music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer from the original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and additional material by James Fenton. The score includes the classic songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” “One Day More,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” “Master Of The House” and many more.

William Peace University Hosts Academic WorldQuest Event Feb. 25

William Peace University, a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced that it is hosting Academic WorldQuest, an action-packed competition to promote knowledge about geography, international history and world affairs, on campus Saturday, Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. Presented by the International Affairs Council of North Carolina, and supported by Leigh Wallace Hines, a William Peace University student interning with the group, Academic WorldQuest will involve teams of four high school contestants and one alternate playing 10 rounds of 10 questions each on worldwide affairs, geography and cultures. Answers will be submitted by the teams, not individuals, and teams will have 60 seconds to answer each question. Answer sheets will be collected at the end of each round, and the trophy goes to the team with the highest total points for the 10 rounds.

Kroger and Duke Heart Center to Host Free Save-A-Life Health Fair at Embassy Suites in Cary, N.C.

Mims Distributing Company Facilitates Distribution of 40,000 Diapers to Triangle Families in Need

Chip Mims, CEO of Mims Distributing Company, a beer distributor that services a nine-county area in and around the Triangle, has announced that the company partnered with Saint Saviour’s Center’s Healthy Baby Program to facilitate the distribution of 40,000 diapers on Friday, Jan. 27 to local families in need. Mims Distributing loaded the diapers, donated by Huggies, onto one of its trucks and then dropped them off at a central location in the Triangle. Volunteers then picked up the diapers and distributed them to other locations.

The Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood Foundation (http://www.ahckids.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of and funds for Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC), a rare but debilitating neurological disorder causing temporary bouts of paralysis, has announced that Jeff Wuchich, the organization’s president, has released a podcast on the disease and Rare Disease Day, which is Feb. 29. Harvey Gates Sr. Named National Hemophilia Foundation Volunteer Of The Year

Harvey Gates Sr., president of the Hemophilia Foundation of Maryland (HFM), has been named the National Hemophilia Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year in honor of his many collaborative initiatives in 2011 between Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTCs) and chapters in the Washington, D.C., area. Gates established chapter summits between HFM, the United Virginia chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation and the Hemophilia Association of the Capital Area to improve outcomes in the areas of patient programs and services, advocacy and patient education.

The NC Center for Women in Public Service Hosts Panel on Engaging Women Leaders

The NC Center for Women in Public Service (NCCWPS), a nonpartisan organization that prepares women for elected and appointed offices statewide, has announced that the center partnered with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Women’s Summit to co-host a Women On Board Workshop panel discussion held in December at the UNC Charlotte Center City building. The panel presentation focused on the importance of women to state and local policy agenda, process and legislative outcomes, and it was intended to show women how to seek out and secure positions on appointed boards on commissions. Participants learned about board and commission service and expectations, identified their public service interests and values, explored the appointment process, and were encouraged to develop a personal action plan for securing an appointment. In the panel discussion, local female public officials and inspirational leaders told their stories about their pathways to success in public service and their experiences with serving.

STATE Contracting, Inc. Completes US 64 Business Intersection Upgrade in Wendell

Deborah Todd, president of STATE Contracting, Inc., has announced that the privately held firm, specializing in site development and roadway improvement, has completed multiple safety upgrades at the intersection of the US 64 Business and NC 97 highways in Wendell, N.C. The redesign and realignment work, which included part of Old Battle Bridge Road southwest of NC 97 at the intersection, encompassed turnkey grading and signalization, minor widening, a change in the traffic pattern and stormwater runoff improvements on US 64 Business. The project began in early 2011 and ended five months later. The contract for STATE’s work, awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation as a Safety Purchase Order, was approximately $600,000.
