The North Carolina China Center, housed at the World Trade Park in the headquarters building of Longistics, hosted a delegation of four Chinese business officials at its offices March 3. Distinguished guests Xu Qihua, deputy general manager for Suzhou Zhongming Optoelectronics Co., Ltd.; Li Zhen, legal contact for Suzhou Zichen Lighting Design Co., Ltd.; Niu Jian, general manager for Jiangsu Tianji Lighting Engineering Co., Ltd.; and Wang Gang, general manager for Shanghia Grand Light Co., Ltd. toured the Center. The quartet visited several other North Carolina businesses and universities including Longistics, who has promoted international trade with China through the launch of the Suzhou Industrial Park International Commodities Exhibition Center, and Cree, where they learned about advanced lighting and design projects. The delegation came under the leadership of Weizhong Zhang, director of the Center’s office in Suzhou, China.

The NC Center for Women in Public Service (NCCWPS), a nonpartisan organization that prepares women for elected and appointed offices statewide, has released a podcast detailing the Women in Office Institute. In the podcast, Cecily Timmons, NCCWPS program director, discusses the Women in Office Institute, an interactive, skills-and-confidence-building program for North Carolina women to hone their leadership skills, prepare for political campaigning, and develop tools for effective and ethical public service. Women of all backgrounds, interests and political affiliations are encouraged to apply before the deadline on Friday, April 1. The Institute will be held over two extended weekends, Thursday, June 23 through Sunday, June 26, and Thursday, July 21 through Saturday, July 23. Both sessions will be held on Peace College’s campus at 15 East Peace St. in downtown Raleigh.

The yearlong celebration supports the goals and ideals of World Veterinary Year by bringing attention to and showing appreciation for the contributions that the veterinary profession has made and continues to make to animal health, public health and food safety. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the veterinary profession. World Veterinary Year events will be taking place around the world to commemorate this anniversary. Nancy McFarlane, president of MedPro Rx, Inc., a provider of specialty pharmacy services to clients with chronic illnesses who need clotting factor, IVIg and other medication, has announced that applications are now open for its “Education Is Power” scholarship program. The annual program is open to U.S. residents who are living with a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia or von Willebrand Disease; entering or attending a community college, junior college, four-year college, university or vocational school; and active in their community. Application forms are available on MedPro Rx’s website and must be postmarked by May 1, 2011 to be eligible for consideration. A minimum of 20 scholarships will be awarded this year ranging in value from $500 to $2,500. Since 2006, MedPro Rx has awarded more than $250,000 in academic scholarships.

The Chef’s Academy (http://www.thechefsacademy.com), the Culinary Division of Harrison College, a 108-year-old, nationally accredited institution that offers more than 30 degree programs in five schools of study, has announced that it has made a donation to support the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina’s 2010 Corporate Good Neighbor Challenge. The Corporate Good Neighbor Challenge is a program that aims to prevent hunger in children and families of Central & Eastern North Carolina by garnering support from area businesses. The Food Bank, with help from its staff, volunteers, companies, organizations and institutes such as The Chef’s Academy, has been able to collect and distribute enough food to provide 94,000 meals every day to families living in its 34-county area of service.
