Volume sales growth of home audio and cinema during 2013 was driven by government policies protecting local production by imposing a mix of artificial barriers including non-automatic import licenses and differential tax rates and duties on imports. In a context of high inflation and devaluation rates, home audio and cinema could cap with a deteriorating economic context thanks to the increasing penetration of local manufacturers, as they continue to substitute imports by widening their product portfolio particularly in hi-fi systems and home cinema and speakers systems. In contrast to other categories within consumer electronics, volume sales of home audio and cinema grew by 1% in 2013. However, in 2014 volume sales contracted by 2% due to a tightening in import barriers that hurts production and sales through imported parts for local producers.

In 2014 sales of writing instruments were driven by important advertising and promotional efforts by companies. In addition to the availability of products through a well-developed distribution network, which is crucial for these companies, several major players also invested in major advertising campaigns to position their brands and products. An interesting example was the Paper Mate brand by Berol, which launched an advertising campaign on television together with digital advertising and billboards in order to promote its new colour range of pens.

Consumer foodservice in the Czech Republic recorded a decline in current value terms in 2013, though this was lower than the decline in the previous year. With slightly improved purchasing powers, Czech consumers spent more on foodservice and sales faced lower decline than during 2012. The number of foreign tourists continued to increase (by 2% in 2013) and this helped support consumer foodservice sales. Fast food performed the best, followed by 100% home delivery/takeaway and self-service...

Many of Spain's leading alcoholic drinks manufacturers are now focusing on RTDs as increasing numbers of Spanish consumers are moving towards easy-to-drink beverages which require little or no preparation and which do need supplementary ingredients to be purchased. Nevertheless, this trend applies mainly to off-trade sales, while sales through the on-trade channel are characterised more by cocktails prepared by bar staff using spirits, mixers and various other ingredients. Consequently, in terms of their on-trade strategies, the leading manufacturers of RTDs/high-strength premixes are focusing more on targeting small bars which do not have the facilities to prepare elaborate cocktails and for whom RTDs represent a practical and rapid alternative.

As of late 2014, it is clear that market leader Triglav has achieved a significant increase in profits this year. However, this is partly because of a sharp improvement in investment earnings and partly due to rigorous control of claims and other costs. Premiums have been contracting in both the life and the non-life segments. As we expected, the difficult economic conditions in Slovenia, and brutal competition in the motor vehicle insurance sub-sector (especially) have continued to have an adverse impact. We see no reason for a decisive improvement in conditions. Taking a five year view, we remain of the view that some of the multi-nationals who are present in Slovenia (and usually with minor market shares) will reconsider their commitment to the market.

We favour the sugar sector in Turkey because of the strong growth potential of the country's confectionery industry and our belief that large changes to the country's sugar production quotas are likely to occur in the coming years. We see upside potential in the livestock sector, as the government's supply of discounted credit has aided growth in recent years. We see some growth potential for the grain, dairy and rice sectors, though we believe the country's production growth in these segments will be hampered by high domestic production and input costs. Agricultural output will generally increase in 2015/16, primarily due to base effects which affected production in the 2014/15 season.

The leading fast food operators continued to look for profitable locations to establish new outlets as the availability of such locations became scarce towards the end of the review period. McDonald?s CR introduced the concept of smaller outlets with more-limited menus and no seated area. The concept is less demanding on operating costs and is suitable for locations such as small shopping centres and transport stations. This type of outlet targets customers that will take products away for consumption at home, on a bus or train, or in the office. The first two smaller outlets with a limited range were opened in the shopping centres Harfa and Europark Sterboholy in Prague in November 2013. Subway aims to open new smaller outlets within service stations and forecourt retailers and in close proximity to hospitals and administrative buildings. The domestic chain Paneria introduced Paneria Expres outlets during 2013.

In 2013, new excise duties of around 160% higher than the previous year resulted in super-premiumisation of the category; instead of shifting part of their consumption onto potentially less expensive lagers, consumers have maintained, and even reinforced, their preference for premium beers, even if it meant drinking less. As per trade sources, the French market is highly atypical when compared to other countries, and buying behaviours confirm the exception that French consumers have a very...

Despite revising our growth forecasts for the Croatian tourism market downwards since 2014, we still expect to see the industry grow healthily over the coming y ears. Accession to the EU, combined with a general recovery in the economies of many European source markets, will continue to boost arrivals to the country by around a million over the forecast period and this will lead to positive developments across all other key market indicators with the exception of outbound tourism, which remains at risk of stagnation due to a relatively flat domestic economy.
