Following the news that taxis will be removed from the bidding process for Certificates of Entitlement (COEs) to purchase vehicles in Singapore, BMI believes there will be little immediate positive impact on passenger car sales as the number of COEs will remain the biggest issue. The government is still on course to proactively slow the market's rate of growth over the next two to three years as cuts in the number of COEs available drive up prices.

Slovakia continues to outpace its larger, but beleaguered counterparts in the EU in terms of economic expansion, as Europe's largest carmaker per capita continues to drive growth. Despite this ongoing feat, however, Slovakia remains the eurozone's second-poorest state and faces the same budget cuts, tax increases and declines in economic confidence being faced across the bloc. BMI expects to see vehicle sales to grow by 4.07% to 81,467 units in 2012 as the market continues to struggle against the above factors. BMI also sees production growth coming in at 2.75% to 606,564 units for the year.

We continue to expect households to cut back and increase saving, and maintain our 2012 forecast for consumption growth to come in at 1.8%, far below the economy's long term average of 3.3%. As declining house prices increase the pressure on households to cut back on their expenditures, company profits are likely to see similar declines. In turn, we expect the headline unemployment rate to soar, erasing the recent slight improvements in the unemployment rate recorded in Q112. Moreover, the recent declines in overall labour participation and the number of full-time employed staff suggest that the recent gains in the headline number could easily reverse.

BMI View: Bulgaria's mobile market is close to saturation, with mobile growth slowing down to single digits during the last three years and mobile penetration reaching 161% by Q112, according to BMI data. We expect mobile network operators to increasingly focus on advanced data services to boost revenue growth amid intense price competition in the voice segment. Meanwhile, we expect consolidation in the mobile and fixed-line sectors to attract much needed capital for network investment and the roll-out of next generation access networks.

Current value sales of eye care in 2011 increased by 2% to reach EUR11 million. Standard eye care recorded the fastest current growth of 2%. The slow performance was relatively in line with that observed during the review period. Consumers traded down to cheaper alternatives or even decided not to purchase eye care products at all, as they were not considered products of primary...

BMI View: Romanian IT spending is expected to reach US$1.4bn in 2012, up 3%, with BMI downwardly revising its forecast given the expectation that domestic demand will be affected by spillover from the weak eurozone. The Romanian IT market's fundamentals of rising computer penetration, rising incomes and the effects of EU membership should support long-term expansion. Strong IT growth in 2011 means that in 2012 the reported rate of market increase will be lower. Last year, total IT spending was estimated to report double-digit growth, with household computer sales particularly strong, while demand for ERP solutions was another growth area.

Pressure sensors are expected to show good growth as they are widely used across different application segments. Currently, the market is dominated by piezoresistive and capacitive sensors but we predict strong growth of optical sensing technology as well in future due to their applications in hazardous environments. Piezoresistive sensors are heavily used in automotive and medical applications while capacitive sensing is highly recommended in the process and petrochemical and oil and gas industries.

BMI View: Portugal continues to implement widespread changes to its healthcare sector as part of the EU/IMF/ECB's EUR78bn economic rescue package approved in May 2011, and the effects of cuts are taking their toll on the pharmaceutical industry. Delayed payments are commonplace, with the impact felt throughout the supply chain, and this is reducing Portugal's appeal to multinationals: Roche has suspended drug supplies to some public hospitals and press reports suggest that Merck KGaA is also considering reducing its investment in the country. While generic drug manufacturers are benefiting from moves such as obligatory prescriptions by active ingredients, the sector also claims that prices have dropped to five-year lows and that increased volume sales do not equate to increased revenues. With domestic opportunities for growth limited, at least in the short term, Portuguese drug makers are turning to exports to bolster the bottom line. Bluepharma now exports 70% of its production and Bial has set a target of raising exports from 40% of production in 2011 to 60% by 2015.
