BMI's Netherlands Metals Report for Q4 2012 examines the long-term potential of the country's highly integrated and competitive steel industry, but flags short-term concerns about the impact of external market problems, notably the eurozone crisis.

South Korean metals consumption growth is set to moderate sharply in 2012 as the country's exports of manufactured goods are hit by a global economic slowdown and an expected contraction in the European market. South Korea is a major producer of steel and slab zinc, but domestic mining output of ferrous and nonferrous metals is small and the country is reliant on imports for the raw materials required by the metals industry. Domestically produced metals and metal products are fundamental to the country's industrial base, as well as trade.

Vehicle production in Ukraine declined 30.6% year-on-year (y-o-y) in July, to 6,698 units. BMI View: According to the agriculture ministry, Bangladesh loses about 80,000 hectares of arable land owing to the impact of climate change, such as through droughts, salinity and floods. Indeed, we view Bangladesh's extreme weather as a major risk to our outlook for the country's agriculture sector. In fact, as crop cultivation is gradually pushed southward due to climate changes, a key factor for survival will be adapting crop varieties to different cultivation environments.

BMI View: Thailand will maintain its status of key Asian agricultural provider in the coming years. However, the government's interference in the market, especially in the rice sector, will hinder the competitiveness of Thai's production compared to its Asian rivals. Although rice farmers will directly gain from the rice guarantee buyback-programme, we are uncertain about the long-term effectiveness of these policies in enhancing Thai food-producing efficiency as well as boosting the country's export competitiveness. The programme appears to be untenable in the medium term, and we see growing risks for Thailand to partially cut the subsidies or drop the policy. This would have major impacts on exports and international rice prices.

BMI View: Despite a growing number of gas export projects, the state-controlled power industry remains committed to the use of gas as its primary energy source. Over the longer term, there is renewables potential - particularly in solar energy - and Qatar may flirt with the possibility of nuclear power. In the meantime, Qatar is in a race to build gas-fired generation in order to meet the growing demands of an expanding population and a rapidly growing economy.

BMI View: We project that Israeli consumer electronics spending will grow by about 5% in US dollar terms in 2012 to US$3.5bn, with our previous forecast being downwardly adjusted owing to a deteriorating economic outlook. In Q112, consumer spending continued to slow, after spending on durable goods such as PCs and TV sets showed signs of falling off in 2011. However, sales of mobile phones should receive a boost from a new law that liberalises mobile phone import. Consumer spending should also be supported by stimulatory fiscal spending, as well as falling unemployment and low inflation and interest rates. Across our five-year forecast period, a growing population and rising computer and internet penetration will drive consumer electronics demand growth, along with new technologies and products such as tablets, smartphones, higher capability netbooks and 3D TV sets.
