In 2013, BMI expects Ukrainian defence spending to increase 0.43% year-on-year (y-o-y) to US$4.67bn, a less-dramatic rise than in recent years but still a massive increase on the recent low of US$3.24bn seen in 2009 at the height of the global financial crisis. The country's economy is currently stagnating in mild recession but received a boost from the influx of foreign tourists visiting in June 2012 when Ukraine cohosted the Euro 2012 international soccer championship with neighbouring Poland. Defence spending accounts for 2.7% of GDP and has done for much of the last decade, a figure that is notably higher than that of most other economically developed nations. Ukraine has been gradually downsizing its total number of military personnel in recent years, however. From a high of 165,000 in 2006, the country had just 139,000 members of its armed forces in 2012. Theoretically, Ukraine has 48.32% of its population available for active service, with 21.6mn men and women from its total population of 45.7mn aged between 16 and 49.

BMI View: Turkey will remain heavily dependent upon oil and gas imports for the foreseeable future. However, its role as a critical energy transit hub between Western and Emerging Europe, the Middle East, the Caspian and Russia provides it with a unique form of leverage and makes it indispensable as a key player in the global energy market. There is also upside potential to the country's domestic energy outlook in the form of Black Sea reserves and unconventionals, including shale, although it is too early for either to be factored into our forecasts.

The 2012/13 cocoa harvest has suffered a serious setback as bad weather in September and October 2012 delayed harvesting of the main crop while also increasing the likelihood of a repeat of the outbreaks of black pod disease and mould that damaged the previous year's harvest. Nevertheless, we still expect a slight increase in output for the 2012/13 season. Heavy autumn rainfall in October led to serious flooding in parts of the country, although the impact on the field crops covered in our report remains uncertain.

Smoking related diseases are generating high costs for the health system in Mexico. As a result, the government, along with other independent institutions, pharmaceutical companies, etc, have been fighting to develop awareness of health-related risks, not only to smokers, but to non-smokers as well. Thus, over the last 10 years, volume sales of cigarettes have experienced a continuous decline in Mexico. Japan is the third largest national economy in the world and according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had the 25th highest per capita GDP in 2011. The Japanese cards and payments industry registered marginal growth during the review period (2008-2012), with a combined card volume CAGR of 3.79%. The 2011 earthquake affected economic growth, but a positive economic outlook, a need for contactless payment systems and secured technology, the growth of e-commerce, and increasing per capita incomes have facilitated the overall growth of the cards and payments industry. During the review period, the size of the cards and payments industry in terms of volume increased at a CAGR of 3.79% to reach 975 million cards in 2012, while in value terms, the industry valued JPY56.8 trillion (US$713 billion). During the review period, the Japanese cards and payments industry was mainly driven by strong growth in the prepaid cards category, which registered a review-period CAGR of 15.03% in volume terms, increasing from 113.2 million in 2008 to 198.3 million in 2012. The debit cards category registered the slowest growth during the review period, at a CAGR of 0.36%, from 409 million cards in 2008 to 414.9 million in 2012. Overall, Japanese consumer prefers to use cash rather than cards when making purchases.

Despite the global financial crisis, the Vietnamese reinsurance segment recorded stable growth during the review period. This is attributable to the increasing cost of reinsurance protection, the nation's growing non-life and personal accident and health insurance segments, a greater understanding of the benefits of reinsurance and the removal of a government policy which forced insurance companies to cede at least 20% of their reinsurance premiums to the only domestic reinsurance company.

The immediate threat of a Greek default and eurozone exit was reduced as the outcome of the legislative elections in June had a much more benign outcome than many feared. An exit would have - and could still be - disastrous for drugmakers operating in the market. But even Greece staying in the monetary union means the government must continue with its austerity programme. While we continue to hold to our view that Germany and the rest of the EU may reduce the focus on austerity and introduce some pro-growth strategies, these are unlikely to generate any upside for the pharmaceutical industry and structural reforms within Greece will be maintained. The government remains committed to huge cuts in its public drug expenditure for 2012, with a painful claw-back tax in operation and no extra resources available to pay-back existing debts.

We are becoming increasingly bullish on the automotive sector in the UK, with signs of a return to growth in both vehicle sales and production. This has facilitated growth in the supplier segment too, with substantial investment across the supply chain. Further, we have seen the UK increasingly becoming an export hub for many auto manufacturers; BMI believes that the country has a fairly attractive business environment owing to the ease of doing business, strong economic and political institutions, and openness to foreign capital. The labour market is also fairly flexible and property rights strongly enforced. We maintain a bullish outlook for the sector over our 2016-forecast period.

BMI View: There remains considerable caution amongst those investing in Bulgaria's construction and infrastructure sector as growth remains low again this quarter. Growth is up slightly, with a forecast of 2.1% year-on-year (y-o-y) in 2012, however this is expected to slip back to 0.8% in 2013. The ongoing eurozone crisis continues to crush any long term signs of growth as private sector worries about corruption and growth have also dampened prospects. The industry value is expected to rise from US$2.8bn this year to US$3.2bn by 2016.
