vimana by System Insights was featured as one of the most important new platforms in the recent issue of M2M NOW. vimana provides the industry’s first Big Data platform specifically designed for manufacturing. The article, authored by industrial journalist, Thomas R. Cutler, noted with the sudden interest in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), manufacturing has finally received the attention it deserves. Even without the love of the technology companies, manufacturers were still able to produce amazing amounts of high quality products with incredible accuracy; there is a lot of room for improvement. According to Cisco, by 2017 there will be 1.7 billion wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) connections across the supply chain. They also estimate that smart factory technology can create US$1.95 trillion in value by 2022 by improving control, agility, and flexibility in the manufacturing processes. This is money saved by the industry because of more efficient practices; the improvement is a return on investment – which considers the cost of the technology.

Will Sobel, CEO of System Insights, explained the project his organization ran under contract from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in a recent issue of Plant Services. Sobel noted, “When we tested the failure scenarios at NIST, we found the system to be very resilient. Since each device can determine if it can recover from an alarm or error, there is no need for a central system to arbitrate simple situations like out of material or a dropped work piece.”

As with many industries African Americans have had to work a bit longer and harder to gain notice, and the writing industry has proved to be no different. The early published works of most African Americans writers of all genres were published under pen names, and were written from a perspective that would not give the reader a clue of the ethnicity or culture of the author.

Will Sobel, CEO of System Insights said, “To achieve a true 4.0 revolution, we will need to instrument and collect huge amounts of data from machine tools and tie the success of the process, quality, into a feedback loop to identify where in the process defects were introduced. The defect detection must be done as close as possible to point at which the defect was introduced so there is the least amount of interference that may make attribution more complex. “

The recent hot topic for the venture capitalists and the industry visionaries is the Internet of Things (IoT). According to Will Sobel, CEO with System Insights, “They have suddenly realized there are more things than people, and unlike people, things produce data. Things are the new buzzwords, but nobody has figured out how to make real money from things or what is the value of a thing. Manufacturing keeps coming up as an area of focus, but again, while the broad strokes are there, the ideas are not grounded. There has been a lot of focus on security and protocols, very necessary, but less focus on how to generate the business value from things.”

According to the United States Census Bureau, in November 2013, America increased exports to $194.9 billion, an increase of $1.8 billion over the previous month. Increases occurred in industries such as capital goods and industrial supplies and materials while decreases were seen in consumer goods as well as foods, feeds, and beverages. "With increases such as this, companies involved in international trade need to ensure they retain the services of a firm specializing in export control compliance as trade legal and regulatory requirements are continuously changing and non-compliance can be costly," Jennifer Kessinger of Global Trade Expertise declares.

Will Sobel, CEO of System Insights argued, “Intelligent applications can become a virtual machinist by learning best practices from the shop floor and then guiding machines and employees as it determines how to optimize the process. These technologies seem very futuristic to many manufacturers, but most of what is needed is available today in the form of sensors and data analytics. We need to do some intense research to determine how to filter the signals to best find the value in the noise.”

A machinist is a person who can manually make parts using machine tools. The role is considered different, especially by expert machinists, than operators since they have honed their skills and has the ability to understand when the machine is operating correctly using their training and experience. The machinist often considers themselves an artist and their skills and training allow them to create remarkably complex parts with high accuracy.

According to Will Sobel, CEO of System Insights, “The issue with the industrial solutions is the data used to make decisions and coordinate actives on the shop floor is almost always lost. No record is kept of the movements of a robot or a machine tool since this is considered a byproduct of the process. What now realized is the data produced by these processes has the potential to unlock the hidden potential to improve efficiency and reduce machine downtimes.”

System Insights, the leading global supplier of manufacturing software in machining based, discrete and process industries, developed an R-package called the ‘vrtk,’ essentially a set of tools for reading and working with data from the vimana platform. William Sobel, CEO of System Insights explained in the company’s blog, “‘vrtk’ is short for ‘vimana Research ToolKit’ or ‘vimana R ToolKit’. It is intended to be an open-source set of the basic tools needed to read and work with data. It is built to work with manufacturing data obtained from System Insights. The motivation behind the project is simple -- to facilitate research using data obtained using the vimana platform. Anyone, in the possession of vimana data should not have to reinvent the wheel in trying to import it into R in the right formats, converting timestamps. This is where the vrtk comes into the picture.”

According to manufacturing journalist, Thomas R. Cutler, in the current issue of Industrial Automation, “OEE is a composite metric, combining machine availability, part quality, and schedule adherence. At best, OEE conflates each of these individual aspects of productivity, and at worst, OEE incorrectly inflates a device's productivity by one of the three metrics, overwhelming the others.” System Insights is profiled as a fast-paced, ever-changing company of automation impacting manufacturing, material handling, and logistics.
