It’s hard to ignore the statistics of drunk driving accidents. Every two hours, three individuals are killed in an alcohol-related traffic incident. These crashes resulted in over 13,000 deaths in 2012. Communities must work together to understand how to avoid drunk driving accidents so they can enact preventative measures for those who drink a few beers and then get behind the wheel of a car. For example, while hosting a party where alcohol will be served, make sure to offer non-alcoholic beverages, as well. Give guests the choice of leaving their keys at the door or not drinking for at least two hours before they plan to drive home. Be sure to have spare beds or air mattresses about for people who imbibe too much wine, liquor, or beer. It is always safer to have someone spend the night than to let them drive intoxicated.

As the Chinese government boosts agriculture productivity in its drive to ensure national food security, we expect government subsidies to continue to grow. In 2011, this spending reached CNY134.5bn (US$21.2bn), with a large portion being channelled into seed, fertiliser and fuel subsidies. That said, we believe the country will inevitably grow more reliant on imports of key grains such as corn, wheat, sugar and even rice in the long term as consumption growth exceeds production growth. Yield improvement would be the fastest way to meet growing demand, and we note that the recent verbal acceptance of genetically modified (GM) seeds is an acknowledgement of the need to recalibrate the government's previously staunch stand against GM products in this respect.

Travel and tourism in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) contributed 5.1% to the national GDP and 5.4% of the country's total employment in 2011. In terms of inbound tourism, 2011 proved to be a spectacular year with 9.8 million travelers visiting the country, 11% more than in 2010. However, outbound tourism growth still continues to outstrip inbound tourism growth, as the number of South Koreans travelling abroad grew by 1.7% to 12.7 million in 2011. The resulting imbalance prompted the government to take steps to boost inbound tourism. While the economic development achieved in the last 50 years has catapulted the country into the ranks of the wealthy nations, South Korea's tourism sector has remained largely neglected. The government has rolled out an extensive campaign to promote South Korea as a tourist destination and is aiming to attract 20 million visitors by 2020. South Korea's relatively low profile is expected to fuel inbound tourism, as tourists visiting Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia increasingly look to South Korea as a previously unexplored destination.

2012 will not be seen as a vintage year for Lithuania's small and crowded insurance sector. Volatility in financial markets has sharply curtailed savers' appetite for unit-linked insurance products, demand for which had been growing quite rapidly in early 2011. This is, in any case, in a country where the relatively few people who have the money and inclination to use life insurance were spending only modest amounts per capita. In part because of the maturity of policies that had been issued in early 2002, payments by the life companies to their customers have soared. Nevertheless, we stress that the three companies that account for about 60% of all activity in the life segment, SEB Life and Pensions International, Swedbank Life Insurance and Mandatum Life, have financial strength, brand strength, diverse distribution channels and a firm commitment to the market.

This year is set to be a trying one for Australia's shipping sector. Global economic headwinds that proved hard to traverse in 2012 are set to continue in 2013, reflected in our poor forecasts for the country's main ports both this year and over the new forecast period to 2017. The Port of Brisbane will lead the way in terms of tonnage and container throughput annual growth this year (3.92% and 3.50% respectively), and will once again take the crown for overall tonnage - 38.67mn tonnes compared with the port of Melbourne's 34.35mn and Sydney's 31.43mn tonnes.

Leading construction data is reinforcing our long-held view that the US construction industry will return to growth in 2012. In fact, the data implies a more positive investment climate for the sector than we had previously factored in, and thus we are upgrading our 2012 growth estimate to 1.2%, with further upside potential. The key growth divers remain the energy and utilities sector, as well as the ongoing revival in residential construction.

BMI maintains its broadly positive view on Peru's freight transport sector. We believe Peru's strong domestic demand story will continue in 2012, although an anticipated drag from net exports means we stick to our below consensus 4.8% real GDP growth forecast. We caution however, that significant external risks to the economy means we cannot rule out a more pronounced slowdown in growth on the back of weaker global demand for the country's minerals and moderating global commodity prices. The expected slowdown in the Chinese economy will drag on the country's exports, putting some downside pressure on volumes, particularly for ports and railways that handle dry bulk.

Zimbabwe's mining sector is set for rapid development as the country dramatically recovers from two decades of declining output. Zimbabwe is richly endowed with deposits of chrome, gold, nickel and platinum, among other minerals. Its gold reserves are among the largest in Africa, while it hosts the second largest platinum reserves in the world. Another segment that has caught the attention of miners in Zimbabwe is diamonds, following the discovery of a number of significant kimberlites.

BMI View: We expect Polish banks to continue performing strongly in 2012, although they are unlikely to repeat the record profits of 2011. However, they are not immune to a financial crisis in the eurozone, although we believe Polish banks are better placed than most of their CEE peers to weather such an event. Polish banks are some of the best placed in emerging Europe to weather a renewed eurozone recession in 2012. They are well-capitalised and profitable, while the strength of the Polish economy will provide a measure of protection against the sovereign debt crisis. However, although Polish banks are insulated, they are not immune to turbulence from the eurozone. The strong presence of foreign parent banks, for instance, is a possible contagion channel. The banking system is therefore unlikely to repeat its 2011 performance, when banks posted record profits of PLN15.7bn (EUR3.8bn), up 37.5% on the previous year.

BMI View: With mobile penetration firmly above 100%, growth in Egypt's mobile sector is expected slow over the next few years. However, the prospect of network expansion to underserved areas and launch of MVNO services present upside risks to this outlook. The downtrend in the fixed-line sector will continue during our forecast period, ending 2016, although we expect the strong uptake of broadband and multiplay services to reduce rate of decline.
